Cowpokes, Culture and Christ-Centered Community

Where has local culture gone? Regional architecture and quaint mom-and-pop establishments have been replaced by strip malls and franchise restaurants. Local dialects and customs likewise disappear as commercial television and the Internet condition us all to talk and act the same.

In contrast, the Boys Ranch Rodeo is a surviving heirloom passed down from our distinct regional culture. Cowgirls, cowboys, critters and clowns will soon meet up at the Marshall Cator Arena to perform before the best fans this side of the Rockies! It’s always an exciting time.

Our boys and girls are encouraged by the outpouring of love shown by the enthusiastic crowds that show up to cheer.

As children, families, staff and friends gather for Rodeo, we are reminded that we are a true community – and our community – is rich in tradition. We take off our hats to honor the flag, and then bow our heads to pray. We stand in silent respect as a riderless horse is escorted around the arena to honor those who have passed. These customs and traditions are repeated every year, giving our Cal Farley’s community a meaningful rhythm. A heartbeat, you might say. They are held in a setting of cottonwood trees and catfish ponds, mule deer and ranch horses.

A return to the Garden of Eden – Texas style.

As you know, many boys and girls today are growing up with video screens, often missing out on human connection and  the wonder of God’s creation.

Our children at Boys Ranch, on the other hand, discover an oasis of safety and belonging where they can grow from the inside out.

Most important, their weary souls are revived with the warmth and wonder necessary to believe the Gospel.

As we have been journeying through the Gospel of Mark this summer in our Sunday morning Chapel services, our kids living at Boys Ranch are being awakened by the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight’ (Mark 1:3).

I have witnessed first-hand how God uses the warmth and wonder of our unique setting to enable boys and girls to hear this call to His heaven-bound community of faith.

Thank you for your support that sustains and preserves our unique garden of culture, community and tradition.

Your prayers, giving and encouragement are making a lasting difference in the lives of our kids, their families and the world. I hope to see you at rodeo!
